Wim Vandewiele

We are very happy to announce that Fr Abbot has appointed Dr Wim Vandewiele as an external collaborator and member of the advisory board for our Centre for Leadership Research and Practice. Wim Vandewiele (Antwerp, 1979) is a Belgian sociologist and a social and cultural anthropologist. He is visiting professor of the Faculty of Theology and Religious studies at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium.

With this appointment we are furthering our international collaborations and Vandewiele’s work at Ealing Abbey focuses on leadership. This is a particularly important area of concern in western monasticism today. Many monastic communities are now coming to understand that the identification, preparation and formation of future leaders is a pressing need.

He gained the degree of license in Sociology (2004). Vandewiele obtained his doctoral degree in  Social and Cultural Anthropology (promotor: prof. dr. Marie-Claire Foblets, KU Leuven / Max Planck Institute) with an ethnography of the Belgian Trappist Abbey of Saint-Sixtus in Westvleteren. The title  is, “Contemplative monasteries in the 21st century: An ethnographic study of present-day contemplative community life” (2014).

Dr Wim Vandewiele’s professional focus

His research focuses nowadays on 1) the empirical and policy-oriented approach of the current dynamics and problems of contemporary monastic communities, and 2) the sociology of the Church.
Wim is a member of the Research Unit of Pastoral and Empirical Theology in the Faculty of Theology and Religious studies.  He is an expert in NVIVO (software for data management and qualitative data analysis). He teaches courses on NVIVO at KU Leuven. Wim gives methodological advice to PhD students and researchers. Vandewiele is also professor of sociology of religion at the International Institute Canon Triest in a two-years master’s program, ‘Master in the Social Doctrine of the Church’ (accredited by the Pontifical Lateran University, Rome).
