Daily Reading from the Rule of St Benedict
CHAPTER 48: DAILY MANUAL WORK continued
FROM September 14th until the beginning of Lent, they are to spend the time reading until the end of the second hour; then at the second hour Terce is to be said, and all work until None at the tasks assigned to them. At the first signal for None, let each break off his work and all hold themselves ready for the second signal to sound. After the meal they can spend their time reading or studying the psalms.
During the days of Lent, let them apply themselves to their reading till the end of the third hour, and then work at the tasks assigned to them until the end of the tenth hour. For these days of Lent, let them all receive a book each from the library, and they are to read this right through from beginning to end; books are to be given out at the beginning of Lent. It is very important that one or two seniors be appointed to go round the monastery during the time when the brethren are supposed to be reading, to keep an eye on them in case somebody may become restless and spend the time in idleness or gossip instead of being intent on his book, thus not only wasting his own time but also distracting others. We hope no one will be found like this, but if there is one he must be punished once and yet again: if he does not amend his ways, he must be disciplined in such a way as to put fear into the rest. Brethren are not to associate with one another at unsuitable times.
